A TWENTY-YEAR PROBATE SOURCE: RECER EXPERIENCE At a luncheon with several financial professionals in Frederick, Maryland, I went through the buffet line and, seeing no acquaintances, sat down at a group table where I knew no one. During the usual introductions, each of the two ladies beside me indicated that they were Certified Public Accountants. When they learned that I was an estate planner, we began to discuss the subject. One of them noted, "I just closed a probate that has been in process for 20 years." Somewhat surprised, I exclaimed, "Twenty years?" "Yes," she explained, "One of the beneficiaries died immediately after the decedent and it caused all kinds of problems. My firm has had the probate for many years. Actually, I 'inherited it' after coming here 5 years ago. But, the total time of probate was 20 years." Also incredulous, the other CPA chimed in. "That is an extraordinarily long time. My longest probate case lasted just 10 years." |
